Objectives
Valorisation of waste streams and multiple use of space in a heated greenhouse can increase operating efficiency. In greenhouse horticulture, the processing of plant and harvest residues and the use of available space underneath the glass house production through the combination of fruit vegetable cultivation and insect cultivation in one and the same space therefore offers opportunities. The aim of the project is to investigate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of insect cultivation among the participating greenhouse horticulturalists.

Valorisatie van afvalstromen en meervoudig gebruik van ruimte in een warmgestookte serre kunnen het bedrijfsrendement opkrikken. In de glastuinbouw biedt de verwerking van plant- en oogstresten en het gebruik van beschikbare ruimte onder de kasteelten door de combinatie van vruchtgroenteteelt en insectenkweek in één en dezelfde ruimte dus kansen. Het project wil de haalbaarheid en rentabiliteit van insectenkweek bij de deelnemende glastuinbouwers onderzoeken.
Activities
Combination cultivations with mealworms will be set up on a limited scale through practical cases. The insects will be fed with a residual waste stream present on the farm (e.g. tomato, cucumber, sweet pepper and strawberry). The growers will be supported in setting up their cultivation and will be offered a 1-day internship at the start of the project. The different practical cases are submitted to an economic analysis in order to identify the most profitable implementation (e.g. type of nutrition, sizing, season).
Activities
Via praktijkcases bij de deelnemende telers en bij Inagro zullen op beperkte schaal combiteelten met meelwormen opgezet worden. Hierbij worden de insecten gevoed met een reststroom aanwezig op het bedrijf (bv. tomaat, komkommer, paprika en aardbei). De telers worden ondersteund bij het opzetten van hun kweek en krijgen bij aanvang van het project een 1-daagse stage aangeboden. De verschillende praktijkcases worden onderworpen aan een economische analyse om de meest rendabele uitvoering (bv. type voeding, dimensionering, seizoen) te identificeren.
