Activities

Planned project activities:

• Project management

• Literature review and research on the natural enemies of bark beetles and biocontrol methods

• Collection of bark beetles and beneficial organisms in Norway spruce forests in Latvia (including

coordination and establishment of forest sample plots for insect collection and field experiments,

ensuring accessibility and monitoring of sample plots)

• Identification and laboratory analysis of collected organisms (invertebrates, microscopic fungi,

bacteria, nematodes, etc.)

• Selection of biocontrol agent candidates and establishment of cultures (including Thanasimus

spp.)

• Determination of optimal cultivation conditions and virulence

• Evaluation of effectiveness in laboratory and field experiments

• Development of a prototype for mass rearing; rearing of beneficial insects for field experiments

• Testing and validation of application methods in forest sample plots

• Dissemination of results (preparing and submitting project information to the EIP network,

publishing project information on the institution’s website; preparing 2 WoS/SCOPUS

publications, 2 presentations at international scientific conferences, organizing a webinar and 4

seminars—including 1 with demonstrations—on the project topic, knowledge transfer on insect

collection and the composition of beneficial organism species in sample plots) and preparation for

commercialization

Activities

Projektā paredzētas aktivitātes:

• Projekta vadība

• Literatūras izpēte un pētījums par mizgraužu dabiskajiem ienaidniekiem un biokontroles

metodēm;

• Mizgraužu un derīgo organismu ievākšana Latvijas egļu mežos ((tai sk. meža parauglaukumu

saskaņošana un ierādīšana kukaiņu ievākšanai un lauka eksperimentiem, pieejamības

nodrošināšana un parauglaukumu uzraudzība);

• Ievākto organismu (bezmugurkaulnieki, mikroskopiskās sēnes, baktērijas, nematodes u.c)

identifikācija un laboratoriskā izpēte;

• Biokontroles līdzekļu kandidātu atlase un kultūru izveide (t.sk. Thanasimus spp.);

• Optimālo audzēšanas apstākļu un virulences noteikšana;

• Efektivitātes pārbaude laboratorijā un lauka eksperimentos;

• Masveida pavairošanas prototipa izstrāde; derīgo kukaiņu savairošana lauka eksperimentiem.

• Pielietošanas metožu aprobācija meža parauglaukumos;

• Rezultātu publiskošana (sagatavot un iesniegt informāciju par projektu EIP tīklam, publicēt

informāciju par projektu iestādes mājas lapā; sagatavot 2 WOS / SCOPUS, 2 ziņojumi

starptautiskās zinātniskās konferencēs, organizēt vebināru un 4 seminārus (tai sk. 1 ar

demonstrējumiem) par projekta tematiku, zināšanu pārnese par kukaiņu ievākšanu un derīgo

organismu sugu sastāvu parauglaukumos) un komercializācijas sagatavošana.

1 Practice Abstracts

The problem identified in the project is the lack of biological control based on locally occurring beneficial organisms, such as entomopathogenic fungi and predatory insects. The project proposes a solution by developing a regionally adapted biological control strategy that includes the isolation, cultivation, and efficacy testing of local organisms within Latvia’s ecosystem.

The practical benefits for the forestry sector include: sustainable pest control with lower costs; preservation of biodiversity; improved carbon sequestration through reduced forest damage; enhanced climate change adaptation by strengthening ecosystem resilience; and maintenance of soil health by avoiding the impact of chemical substances.

The aim of the project is to develop effective, environmentally friendly, and practically applicable biological control solutions for limiting bark beetle populations in Latvian forests. Within the project, research will be carried out on the natural enemies of bark beetles—entomopathogens, parasitic nematodes, predators, and parasitoids—to identify the most suitable organisms for biological control. Laboratory cultures will be established, and methods for their propagation and application will be developed. Through laboratory and field experiments, the effectiveness of the developed bioagents and their impact on bark beetle populations will be assessed.

Projektā identificētā problēma ir bioloģiskās kontroles trūkums, kas balstītos uz vietējiem

labvēlīgajiem organismiem, piemēram, entomopatogēnām sēnēm un plēsīgajiem kukaiņiem.

Projekts piedāvā risinājumu, izstrādājot reģionāli pielāgotu bioloģiskās kontroles stratēģiju, kas

ietver vietējo organismu izdalīšanu, kultivēšanu un efektivitātes testēšanu Latvijas ekosistēmā.

Projekta praktiskie ieguvumi mežsaimniecības nozarei ietver: ilgtspējīgu kaitēkļu kontroli ar

zemākām izmaksām; bioloģiskās daudzveidības saglabāšanu; oglekļa piesaistes uzlabošanu,

samazinot mežu bojājumus; pielāgošanos klimata pārmaiņām, stiprinot ekosistēmu noturību;

augsnes veselības saglabāšanu, izvairoties no ķīmisko vielu ietekmes.

Projekta mērķis ir izstrādāt efektīvus, videi draudzīgus un praktiski pielietojamus bioloģiskās

kontroles risinājumus mizgraužu populāciju ierobežošanai Latvijas mežos. Projekta ietvaros tiks

veikta mizgraužu dabisko ienaidnieku – entomopatogēnu, parazītisko nematožu, plēsēju un

parazitoīdu – izpēte, atlasot bioloģiskajai metodei piemērotākos organismus. Tiks izveidotas

laboratorijas kultūras un izstrādāti to pavairošanas un pielietošanas paņēmieni. Veicot

laboratorijas un lauka eksperimentus, tiks novērtēta izstrādāto bioaģentu efektivitāte un ietekme

uz mizgraužu populācijām.
