High levels of flock management require high levels of record keeping and animal identification. There are many options to improve ewe identification such as marking the final four digits of the ewes ear tag on her side to enable identification from a distance e.g. for outdoor lambing. Another helpful tool is the use of a cull tag system where a cull tag is applied when an issue (eg lambing difficulty, poor mothering ability, mastitis) arises as many problems are hard to detect subsequently. A cull tag ensures that a ewe will be easily identified at culling as marking ewes for culling with spray paint may not be identifiable at culling as the marking wears off/disappears with time. Another option for identifying different sheep is the use of coloured discs which are placed between the tag and the ear and can be used to identify many things such as year of birth, genotype or sire.
