1 Practice Abstracts

The project consists of meticulously mapping risk factors for tail biting at the different farms where all fattening pigs will eventually enter a rooting pen. By using the latest techniques, it monitors what is happening to the pigs during rearing and deploys appropriate measures for improvement. This basic approach should result in the complete cessation of tail docking, while at the same time a market study is started for the realization of a healthy earnings model in the chain with sales of this specific pork.

Het project bestaat uit het nauwgezet in kaart brengen van risicofactoren voor staartbijten op de verschillende bedrijven waarbij alle vleesvarkens uiteindelijk in een wroetstal komen. Door gebruik te maken van de nieuwste technieken wordt gemonitord wat zich gedurende de opfok allemaal afspeelt bij de varkens en worden de passende maatregelen ter verbetering ingezet. Deze basisaanpak moet uitmonden in geheel stoppen met couperen van de staarten, waarbij tegelijkertijd een marktverkenning opgestart wordt voor realisatie van een gezond verdienmodel in de keten met afzet van dit specifieke varkensvlees.
