Event report - EU CAP Network workshop ‘Circular bioeconomy – valorisation of forest by-products’

The EU CAP Network workshop 'Circular bioeconomy - valorisation of forest by-products' focused on fostering circular bioeconomy principles by emphasising the need for valorisation of by-products in the forestry sector. Key discussions revolved around innovative solutions, knowledge gaps, and the frameworks that are essential for sustainable implementation.

The workshop brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including researchers, farmers, foresters, experts, practitioners, Managing Authorities and industry representatives to explore actionable strategies for accelerating the circular bioeconomy within the European Union, with a specific focus on forest-based resources. Recognising the untapped potential of forestry by-products and residues, participants identified innovative approaches and emerging technologies that can transform these materials into high-value bio-based products. These solutions offer promising pathways for reducing waste, enhancing resource efficiency, and creating new market opportunities in rural and forest-dependent regions.

Participants emphasised that numerous challenges must be addressed, to include cultural resistance to change, fragmented forest ownership, weak coordination among stakeholders as well as technical limitations such as poor product performance and logistics, raw material shortages, and low consumer uptake. For these, several practical solutions were proposed, including the creation of digital platforms for project coordination and knowledge flow, support for grassroots innovation and business, and education campaigns to shift consumer behaviour.

Across all discussions, five key messages stood out: the need for better coordination and long-term planning, the importance of bottom-up engagement, the urgency of integrating digital and green transitions, the necessity of context-specific strategies, and the critical role of youth and education in building a resilient circular bioeconomy.

This document provides a comprehensive summary of the workshop, covering background information, presentations, project showcases, field visits, and discussions on implementation challenges. It also highlights the importance of a multi-actor approach in strengthening circular bioeconomy practices and creating a sustainable, resource-efficient forestry sector. Special attention was given to successful case studies, best practices, and frameworks that can drive the transition toward a more circular economy.
