EU CAP Network cross-visit 'Production of protein crops under climate change'

This report highlights the main outcomes of the discussions, the practical lessons from the field visit, and the collaborative ideas arising from the cross-visit between EIP-AGRI Operational Group projects (OGs) working in the field of production of protein crops under climate change, which took place on 18-19 June 2026 in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary.

The cross-visit created a practical space for exchanges between the OGs working on different elements of the protein-crop challenge. Participants compared experiences on crop adaptation, soil management, farmer engagement, processing, and markets. The field visit added a strong practical dimension, and showed how soil improvement, cover crops, no-till, mechanical weed control, and seed processing can be considered together at the farm level.

A clear message emerged: successful protein-crop innovation requires more than a technically good crop. It also needs long-term testing, trusted farmer networks, suitable machinery, viable markets, and links between production, processing, and end users. The collaboration ideas developed during the cross-visit provide a basis for continued exchange and possible future co-operation between the participating OGs.
