Final report - Monitoring animal welfare

The cross-visit ‘Monitoring animal welfare’ took place in Italy, on 8-9 May 2025.

Animal welfare is closely linked to human health and environmental sustainability, reflecting the principles of the 'One Welfare' and 'One Health' approaches. For over 40 years, the EU has promoted ethical farming, and new legislation proposed in December 2023 reflects growing consumer demand and scientific advances.

Monitoring is essential for improving welfare in practice. EIP-AGRI Operational Groups are testing innovative tools, including precision livestock technologies and animal-based indicators, to improve the assessment of welfare on farms.

This cross-visit brought together stakeholders to exchange knowledge, explore smart monitoring solutions, and support farmers in delivering high-welfare, resilient livestock systems.
