Activities

Based on camera images (remote sensing) of at least 50 hectares of orchards just after harvesting and on interviews with growers, an initial inventory will be made of the presence and severity of pear decline in Flemish pear cultivation. Specific attention will be paid to investigating the causes and spread of the disease, and research will also be conducted into the factors that promote or inhibit the disease. Preliminary tests will be set up for the remediation of declining trees. Four remediation techniques will be tested: watering with humic acids, watering with iron chelate and calcium nitrate, a combination of both, and finally the creation of vertical wounds above the grafting site for the production of callus tissue. Finally, molecular analyses will be used to verify whether pear decline is more prevalent in new pear varieties.

Activities

Op basis van camerabeelden (remote sensing) van minstens 50 ha boomgaarden net na de pluk en op basis van interviews met telers wordt in een eerste fase een inventarisatie gemaakt over de aanwezigheid en ernst van pear decline in de Vlaamse perenteelt. Er is specifieke aandacht voor het onderzoeken van de oorzaken en verspreiding van de ziekte en er zal ook onderzocht worden welke factoren de ziekte bevorderen of afremmen. Preliminaire tests worden opgezet voor remediatie van wegkwijnende bomen. Hierbij worden 4 remediatie technieken getest: aangieten met huminezuren, aangieten met ijzerchelaat en calciumnitraat, combinatie van beide en ten slotte creatie van verticale wonden pver de entplaats voor de aanmaak van callusweefsel. Ten slotte wordt geverifieerd of pear decline meer voorkomt bij nieuwe perenrassen door middel van moleculaire analyses.

Growers report withering pear trees: trees are stunted in growth, show premature autumn colouring and produce inferior fruit. One of the possible causes is the phytoplasma that causes pear decline. New pear varieties are thought to be more susceptible than Conference, which is slowing down the planting of these new varieties. There is concern that this phenomenon will jeopardise the future of pear cultivation. The aim is (1) to obtain a data- and fact-based assessment of the severity of pear decline in Flemish pear cultivation, with indications of the causes of its introduction and spread, and (2) to identify the factors that stimulate or inhibit this disease so that immediate recommendations can be made or hypotheses ruled out.

is het fytoplasma dat pear decline veroorzaakt. Nieuwe perenrassen zijn vermoedelijk gevoeliger dan Conference, wat het aanplanten van deze nieuwe rassen afremt. Er is onrust dat dit verschijnsel een hypotheek legt op de toekomst van perenteelt. Het doel is (1) een op data en feiten gebaseerde status krijgen van de ernst van de aanwezigheid van pear decline in de Vlaamse perenteelt, met indicaties over oorzaken van insleep en verspreiding en (2) over de stimulerende of remmende factoren van deze ziekte zodat er onmiddellijke aanbevelingen kunnen gebeuren of hypothesen uitgesloten kunnen worden.
