Using a measuring tape for timing of first mating in beef heifers

The earlier first calving occurs on a beef farm, the better reproductive efficiency that is achieved. However, mating heifers too early can cause serious health problems for calves and cows, which highlights the significance of knowing the optimum time for the first mating. The right timing of the first mating of beef heifers not only depends on age, but on live- weight and physical maturity. On beef farms in Germany where weighing of beef animals does not occurr, researchers have developed a quick and easy system to estimate the body weight of the animals by using a tape measure.The measurement is taken around the thorax of the animal to get the thoracic circumference (cm). An indicator for the estimated weight is shown next to each measurement, according to the breed. The target is to mate when the heifer reaches approximately 60% of their expected adult body weight. Different measuring tapes for different breeds are available. The tapes are not as accurate as a weighing scale but more accurate than just estimating by sight. It is recommended that measurements are always taken at the same point on the thorax and by the same operator. The tape measure is a helpful tool for the farmer, it can ensure that heifers do not get pregnant too early, which prevents negative health effects. The timing of the first mating/calving can be optimized, increasing the number of calves per cow per year. The right timing for the first mating is the key factor for a long and productive life of the suckler cow and highly important for the reproduction efficiency of the herd.
Je früher Rinder zum ersten mal kalben, desto besser ist dies für die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Betriebes. Ein zu frühes Belegen der Rinder kann jedoch gesundheitliche Probleme für Kuh und Kalb verursachen. Daher ist es wichtig, den optimalen Belegungszeitpunkt zu kennen. Dieser hängt nicht nur vom Alter, sondern von Gewicht und der körperlichen Reife ab. Nur sehr wenige Betriebe in Deutschland haben die Möglichkeit ihre Tiere zu wiegen. Um dieses Problem zu lösen wurde ein einfaches System entwickelt, das Körpergewicht der Tiere einzuschätzen. Mit Hilfe eines speziellen Maßbandes wird der Umfang des Brustkorbs gemessen. Neben der Skala für den Brustumfang in cm sind Skalen für verschiedene Rinderrassen vorhanden, um das Gewich in Abhängigkeit zur Rasse zu schätzen. Ziel ist eine erste Belegung der Rinder, wenn sie etwa 60% ihres zu erwartenden Engewichts als ausgewachsene Tiere erreicht haben. Das Messen mit dem Maßband ist nicht so genau wie das Wiegen, aber dennoch genauer als mit bloßem Auge zu schätzen. Die Messung sollte immer an der gleichen Stelle am Brustkorb erfolgen und von der gleichen Person durchgeführt werden. Die Messung mit dem Maßband ist ein gutes Hilfsmittel um zu verhindern, dass Rinder zu früh tragend werden und gesundheitliche Folgen davon tragen. Ebenso kann eine zu späte Trächtigkeit vermieden werden. Auf diese Weise hat die Anwendung des Maßbands einen positive Effekt auf die Produktionseffizienz des Betriebs. Der Zeitpunkt der ersten Trächtigkeit bzw. Der ersten Kalbung kann so optimiert und die Zahl der Kälber pro Kuh und Jahr erhöht werden. Der Zeitpunkt für die erste Belegung ist ein Schlüsselfaktor für ein langes und produktives Leben der Mutterkuh und für die Effizienz der Reproduktion der gesamten Herde.
