The Teagasc Signpost Programme – a campaign to lead climate action by Irish farmers.

In Ireland, beef farmers are committed to playing their part in addressing climate change and being part of the solution. Against this background, stakeholders in Irish agriculture have launched the Signpost programme to lead climate action by Irish farmers. The Teagasc Signpost programme is a multi-annual campaign aiming to reduce agricultural emissions, more specifically greenhouse-gas and ammonia emission, improve water quality and biodiversity on all Irish farms. The program will also monitor changes in soil carbon levels on participating Signpost farms to evaluate carbon sequestration. In addition to soil, an estimate of the above ground biomass will be made, so that C sequestration in trees and hedgerows can be quantified also. The benefit of the Signpost programme is the potentially very positive impact across all Irish farms, especially in terms of environmental sustainability and carbon sequestration. By measuring and evaluating key criteria around climate change at demonstration farm level the programme can move the sector towards more sustainable farming systems. By analysing and measuring carbon sequestration, the programme can establish the real value farming can bring to climate change. In addition the program aims to reduce costs and create more profitable and sustainable farming enterprises, by improving production efficiency . Key to the programmes success is a close engagement with farmers and an established network of demonstration farms to guide all farmers to move towards more sustainable farming practices.
