Risk–Benefit Assessment of Foods to Support Policy Decisions: Insights from an International Workshop
Translation of risk–benefit assessment (RBA) findings into policies within the area of nutrition and food safety is still limited. We organized a stakeholder workshop to identify the challenges and opportunities in RBA to support evidence-based public health.
The workshop brought together European regulators and RBA experts. Participants identified key obstacles, including limited awareness, lack of harmonized practices, and communication gaps, that hinder the practical uptake of RBA outputs in decision-making.
To improve RBA’s policy relevance, participants emphasized structured stakeholder engagement, strengthened transparency in assessment processes, and harmonization of RBA frameworks and simplified approaches are needed.
Our findings underscore RBA’s potential as a decision-support tool to inform food policies that balance nutrition, food safety, and broader food-system goals. The workshop results offer actionable directions for enhancing RBA methodologies and fostering their adoption, ultimately contributing to more coherent and science-based
