NEW SURVEY INSTRUMENTS TO MEASURE EVALUATIONS OF FOOD WASTE ACTIONS

Within the EU project ToNoWaste and beyond, many initiatives are taken to reduce food waste. The success of these actions not only depends on whether food waste is reduced and sustainability goals achieved, but also on how these actions are evaluated by the people who initiated these.

Subjective acceptance of food waste reducing actions determines the likelihood that these actions will be continued in the future and the potential that the actions will be taken up by others. Succesful actions have a high quality, are seen as not just effective in diminishing food waste but also as efficient in terms of time and efforts, and are aligned with the values and working styles of people and organizations.

Ideally, these actions are controllable and have positive wider systemic effects beyond waste reduction. Moreover, the possibilities to transfer actions to other locations and to scale these up to reach more people are
important as well. These aspects are incorporated in the ToNoWaste survey for action owners, by which the potential for success of actions to reduce food waste can be assessed.

The survey is based among others on the evaluation framework that was developed by the European Consumer Food Waste Forum.
