Food Safety Data: Trusting, Sharing and Understanding
To demonstrate how structured data sharing can strengthen risk management, enhance predictive modelling, and improve decision-making in food safety.
The presentation showed that current modelling approaches are constrained by the data available for meaningfully analysing complex systems, such as those that concern food safety. Through case studies including the Food Industry Intelligence Network (fiin), the FDA Food Safety Data Sharing Platform, and Western Growers’ GreenLink®, it illustrated how anonymised, aggregated and harmonised data platforms enable earlier detection of vulnerabilities, optimisation of resources, and how sharing data can have a direct benefit to those sharing data.
Data sharing requires formal data governance mechanisms such as data trusts, which combine legal agreements with secure technical platforms. Standardised data formats and APIs should be prioritised to ensure efficiency and interoperability, and expert oversight remains critical to the correct contextual evaluation of inbound and evolving data.
Data sharing between industry, regulatory and public partners enables stakeholders to identify trends not visible in isolation, allocate testing resources more efficiently, and build trust among regulators, industry and consumers.
