The first expected result of the project was the characterisation of grapevine trunk diseases (GTD), the demonstration of the efficacy of botanical extracts and the application for a patent for their use.
Fungi causing GTD have been isolated from all samples obtained in the pilot farms of the project. These results confirm infection by GTD-causing fungi.
Botanical extracts were obtained from agro-industrial residues, and their efficacy in inhibiting GTD was evaluated. Several extracts showed high efficacy against some diseases such as Eutypa dieback, blackfoot, tinder and Petri disease, and these results were published in an informative journal (https://www.interempresas.net/Flipbooks/TE/302/2/).
The extracts were tested for toxicity to aquatic and terrestrial environments, using biological indicators for both environments. It could be concluded that the most effective extracts against GTD are considered as Non-Toxic for the terrestrial and aquatic environment, thus meeting the ecotoxicological criteria.
Prior to field application, phytotoxicity tests were carried out in greenhouses with sensitive plants, applying the extracts and ozonised water, with satisfactory results. Tests were also carried out on the application of the two strategies at the same time (formulated together with ozonised water), and it was concluded that the treatments are totally compatible and produce low phytotoxicity.
Finally, a patent application was successfully filed for one of the botanical extracts, entitled: Fungicidal composition for the prevention and control of grapevine wood diseases (ES 2 936 218 A1).
