Digital reporting and citizen science for early detection of the Asian hornet

The invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is spreading in Germany and represents a growing threat to honeybees, pollination services, biodiversity and honey production. To respond quickly and limit damage, authorities, beekeepers and environmental organisations are increasingly relying on digital tools combined with citizen participation. A HOLiFOOD case study shows how these approaches significantly improve early detection and management of this invasive species.

Across Germany, more than 13 regional platforms and mobile apps allow citizens and practitioners to report suspected Asian hornet sightings. Using simple online forms or apps such as Survey123 and Meine Umwelt, users can upload photos and provide key information such as location and date. This creates a dense, real-time monitoring network that helps authorities and beekeeping organisations identify new outbreaks faster and target control measures more efficiently.

Innovative AI-based tools, such as the Picture Insect app, further support practitioners by enabling quick species identification via smartphone photos. This helps distinguish Asian hornets from protected European hornets, reducing reporting errors and unnecessary interventions. For beekeepers, early detection means fewer colony losses, lower control costs and better protection of production. By combining citizen science, digital platforms and AI, Germany is building a scalable and cost-effective model for invasive species management that can be replicated across Europe.
