Agri-Cluster: Collaborative DSS for the transparency and sustainability of the agricultural system

Objective:
This project addresses the urgent need for sustainable agriculture by supporting farmers in reducing and optimizing the use of Plant Protection Products (PPPs). Given climate change, new diseases, and stricter EU regulations, farmers must adopt smarter tools to stay competitive and protect their crops. However, many struggle to use digital Decision Support Systems (DSS) due to cultural, organizational, and learning barriers. The project aims to overcome these hurdles by creating a collaborative digital platform that enhances knowledge sharing and decision-making.

Results:
Agri-Cluster is an innovative, collaborative data-sharing platform that connects farmers and agronomic consultants, allowing them to exchange real-time information on pest outbreaks, disease risks, PPP use, and more. This peer-to-peer knowledge flow accelerates learning, improves DSS accuracy through richer datasets, and customizes predictions for each farmer group. By pooling data and experiences, Agri-Cluster empowers users to make smarter, more precise decisions on crop protection, reducing unnecessary pesticide use.

Practical Implications/Recommendations:
Farmers benefit from a cost-effective, easy-to-use DSS that improves crop health forecasts and minimizes PPP applications, cutting input costs and environmental impact. Farmers’ associations can enhance member support by integrating Agri-Cluster into advisory services, streamlining data sharing with regulatory bodies. Agronomic consultants gain an efficient tool to manage multiple clients collaboratively, optimizing treatments and compliance. In the long run, reduced PPP use aligns with EU incentives and strengthens product traceability and consumer trust. Adopting Agri-Cluster supports compliance, boosts sustainability, and offers competitive advantages, making it a valuable investment for farms aiming to modernize and future-proof their operations.
