Context
Mediterranean agriculture is increasingly affected by diffuse pollution from nutrients, pesticides and sediments, together with water scarcity and the impacts of climate change. Farmers, water managers and public authorities need practical solutions that improve water quality while maintaining productive and resilient farming systems. Existing monitoring approaches often fail to detect pollution early enough or to assess its movement across catchments. PATH4MED addresses these challenges by combining innovative monitoring technologies, nature-based solutions, digital agriculture, smart irrigation and integrated water management. Through Demonstration Sites across different Mediterranean regions, the project develops and validates practical solutions that can be transferred and replicated in other agricultural areas facing similar environmental pressures.
Objectives
PATH4MED aims to develop, demonstrate and promote innovative pathways for preventing, reducing and remediating water and soil pollution in Mediterranean agricultural landscapes. The project combines advanced monitoring techniques, digital technologies, nature-based solutions and sustainable agricultural practices to improve water quality, strengthen ecosystem resilience and support more sustainable farming systems. Through collaboration between researchers, farmers, advisors, water authorities and policymakers, PATH4MED facilitates the uptake and replication of practical solutions contributing to the European Green Deal, the Water Framework Directive, the Common Agricultural Policy and the Zero Pollution Action Plan.
Activities
PATH4MED implements demonstration activities across several Mediterranean regions where innovative solutions are tested under real farming conditions. Activities include environmental DNA (eDNA) and environmental RNA (eRNA) monitoring, Earth Observation and remote sensing, smart irrigation, nutrient management, nature-based solutions, long-term environmental monitoring, modelling and nitrate isotope analysis. The project also develops digital tools, supports participatory approaches through Living Labs, engages stakeholders, organises training and demonstration events, prepares Practice Abstracts and policy recommendations, and promotes the transfer and replication of successful solutions through communication and exploitation activities.
Other comments
PATH4MED will continue to update its Practice Abstracts, policy recommendations and dissemination materials throughout the project, ensuring that validated solutions and lessons learned are made available to farmers, advisors, water managers and policymakers. The project encourages collaboration across Mediterranean regions and supports the wider uptake and replication of innovative solutions for reducing diffuse agricultural pollution.
