Summary
Spain’s ‘Restauración en RED’ project is a rural networking platform connecting food producers, restaurants, tourism businesses and local development actors across rural Spain. Co-funded by LEADER, the project focused on identifying untapped synergies between stakeholders who often worked separately despite sharing common territorial interests and economic opportunities.
Networking activities, facilitation support and digital communication tools encouraged collaboration between rural hospitality businesses, local suppliers and community organisations interested in strengthening local food systems and visitor experiences. Project benefits helped rural actors discover practical cooperation opportunities linked to local sourcing, gastronomy, tourism and territorial identity.
LEADER funding helped cover costs for the expertise and coordination needed to connect stakeholders who previously lacked the time, structures or networks required for collaboration. This good practice highlights LEADER’s distinctive strengths for investing in local networking capacity that helps rural communities better organise themselves around shared economic opportunities, local knowledge and long-term territorial cooperation.
Results
- Restauración en RED strengthened durable relationships between rural hospitality businesses, food producers and local development actors through structured networking activities and facilitated exchanges. Stakeholders gained greater visibility around shared interests, complementary services and practical cooperation opportunities linked to local food systems and gastronomy.
- The platform increased awareness around the economic value generated through local sourcing, territorial branding and coordinated visitor experiences connected to rural identity and food culture. Participating businesses developed a stronger understanding of how collaboration could strengthen market reach and local economic circulation.
- Digital communication and networking tools improved information exchange between participants while strengthening visibility for rural gastronomy initiatives operating across different territories.
- Outcomes offer useful inspiration for rural development stakeholders seeking practical ways to activate local cooperation through facilitation, relationship-building and targeted networking support – rather than large infrastructure investments alone.

Context
Local gastronomy has become an important driver for rural identity, tourism and territorial branding across many European regions. Restaurants, producers, accommodation providers and cultural organisations often share strong links with local landscapes and traditions, yet many rural territories still lack structured mechanisms helping these actors cooperate strategically.
Short food supply chains and place-based visitor experiences are attracting strong public interest as consumers look for authentic food, regional products and closer connections with rural communities. Rural hospitality businesses now play a valuable role within local food systems through promoting nearby producers, seasonal ingredients and local cultural heritage.
LEADER has long supported bottom-up cooperation and territorial networking through approaches that place local relationships at the centre of rural development. Complementing larger investment programmes focused mainly on infrastructure or sector-specific delivery, LEADER can fund facilitation processes helping communities organise themselves around shared opportunities and local assets.
Spain’s diverse rural regions contain rich gastronomic traditions and strong local producer networks, creating valuable potential for collaboration between tourism, hospitality and agriculture. Many businesses already operate successfully within their own sectors but benefit from stronger territorial coordination and shared promotion.
The following good practice project details about ‘Restauración en RED’ reflects this networking-based approach to rural development. Objectives, actions, results and lessons are described below, noting how the platform focused on connecting people, knowledge and local economic actors – to enable new cooperation opportunities via dialogue, visibility and practical exchange.
Objectives
Project goals sought to strengthen cooperation between rural hospitality businesses, food producers, tourism actors and local development organisations through creating structured networking and communication spaces. Building stronger territorial relationships formed a central part of the planned development approach.
Improving awareness around local sourcing opportunities and complementary business activities aimed to support stronger local economic connections linked to gastronomy and territorial identity. The project planned to encourage greater collaboration between actors who traditionally operated separately despite sharing common interests.
Developing digital communication tools and networking activities aimed at improving information exchange between participants while increasing visibility for rural gastronomy initiatives and local food systems.
Further good LEADER practice sought to strengthen local development capacity through facilitation support, helping rural stakeholders identify practical cooperation opportunities and shared territorial value.
Activities
Restauración en RED was organised as a cooperative action between six LEADER Local Action Groups (LAGs) working across rural territories in Castilla y León. These were the LAGs Adescas (León), Cuatro Valles (León), POEDA (León), Adecoar (Burgos), Adri Cerrato Palentino (Palencia) and ADRI Valladolid Norte (Valladolid) as coordinating Local Action Group (LAG).
The participating LAGs coordinated activities linked to gastronomy, tourism and local food promotion through a shared networking platform.
Meetings and exchanges brought together restaurants, agri-food businesses, tourism actors and rural development organisations participating in the project. Networking activities focused on encouraging contact between local stakeholders connected to food production, hospitality and territorial promotion.
Key LEADER support developed an online platform presenting participating restaurants, local products and gastronomy experiences linked to rural territories involved in the cooperation project. Digital communication activities promoted rural food culture, tourism experiences and local gastronomy businesses through website content and online visibility actions.
Social media communication formed part of the outreach work linked to the platform. Online promotion highlighted local dishes, participating businesses, regional food products and rural visitor experiences connected to gastronomy and tourism.
Participation in fairs and promotional events increased the visibility of the cooperation activities. Restauración en RED participated in tourism and gastronomy promotion for regional visitor markets, including the INTUR tourism fair.
Gastronomy activities and show cooking events involved local restaurants and food products from participating territories. These activities presented regional cuisine and promoted collaboration between hospitality businesses and local producers.
Communication activities promoted territorial gastronomy routes, local food culture and participating rural businesses through shared branding and promotional material linked to the network.
The cooperation project further supported exchanges between participating LEADER territories around rural gastronomy, tourism promotion and local economic cooperation linked to food systems and hospitality activities.

Key lessons
- Strong rural networking can generate valuable local development impacts when facilitation support helps stakeholders identify practical synergies linked to shared territorial interests.

- Particular value emerged from investing in communication, facilitation and relationship-building rather than focusing only on infrastructure or standalone business investments.
- Relatively modest networking support stimulated wider economic and social connections across participating rural territories.
- Neutral coordination structures proved useful in bringing together actors from different sectors around common local interests related to gastronomy, tourism and territorial identity.
