Summary
The ‘Grape Seed Oil’ project explored how grape seed oil production could be implemented profitably at vineyard scale – helping winegrowers diversify their product range and strengthen their competitiveness. By building sustainable, Luxembourg-based value chains and embracing circular economy principles, the project aimed to upcycle winemaking by-products into high-quality goods, with grape seed oil as the flagship product.

This initiative revisited and expanded upon a 2004 LEADER study that focused on grape seed extraction in Luxembourg. Unlike the earlier project, which considered the process from the perspective of an oil mill, this effort shifted the focus to the vineyard itself. The aim was to explore how grape seed oil could be produced directly by winegrowers, using a smaller-scale, more feasible approach.
By doing so, the project targeted several goals: improving the economic viability of wine farms through product diversification, making better use of harvest residues and promoting the development of sustainable, local value chains. At its core was the idea of upcycling: turning what was once considered waste – grape seeds – into a premium, marketable product.
This new perspective not only opened up new revenue opportunities for vineyards but also aligned with broader sustainability ambitions, offering a tangible example of circular economy principles in action within Luxembourg’s wine sector.
